Drawings underscore a conceptual language present in my installations. The exhibition Points of Contact, 2015, included two new installations, Between Us and Social Blanket and a related drawing series Interstices--defined as “small spaces in between things”. The interlace of weave structure offers as analogy between the two mediums. In drawing, focus is narrowed to the porous interstitial space of expanded grid structures. Lines moving over/under in tight tension/release and the mesh of space and light left in-between have similar requirements of flexibility and adherence as do human exchange.

Intervals and enclosures follow Lackey’s 2011 research of pilgrimage circuits in Japan and iterate her continuing interest in mapping, walking and the mnemonic potential that exists within transitions between open and enclosed space.

My works on paper involve placing hundreds of labels, dots, stickers and tape on the surface of translucent paper. The adhesive materials are painted over and mostly removed leaving outlines that trigger intuitive associations. Shapes are connected with stitched lines of thread, tape and additions of paint resulting in a circuit of small interlocking relationships.  Slowly fabricated, meticulous with intimate detail, they echo the resonance of “place” and our desire to locate, map, imagine...build. Each suggests a blueprint of ideas for subsequent installations, informing a larger, more experimental and interactive approach to place-making.

panorama 9-21, MAP ROOM installation, 2005

The 2005 installation included two sets of sequenced works on paper titled panorama and survey made during a 2005 artist residency at the Camargo Foundation, Cassis, France. Conceptual gene pools are redefined in these works that record daily observations and responses to the personal work/live community environments in Cassis. Using a surface of translucent paper with charting tape as a drawing material, a branching linear path was laid down to describe the space of each interdisciplinary fellow. Panorama is a continuous drawing (62 feet), the circumference of the artist’s studio at Camargo. The intention of panorama underscores the conceptual framework of mapping an active space where ideas intermingle and creative works are in an open state of connection, change, influence, grafting and re-arrangement. A large scale map legend was included with the installation.

Survey sequence, composed of 14 diagrams, pertains to the formal discussion/conversations of each fellow. Survey 1 through 12 are subtitled with initials to denote whose discussion is represented and are further described on the map legend. The space of words is illusive. Perhaps we remember branching networks, labyrinths of body language, smells, sounds or simple notes of language. The form of discussion is a mnemonic, projected as an intricate container and potential architectural plan to build upon.
